Question: The maps below show a town centre in 1990 and the same town centre today.
ANSWER:
The sketches illustrate the changes of a town center from 1990 to the present. Overall, the most noticeable change is the consolidation of individual retail stores into a mall, along with the repurposing of houses into apartments. Additionally, a pedestrianized street and pedestrian crossings have been added.
In 1990, the far north included a block of stores, including a newsagent, a grocery, a baker, a butcher, a cafe and a childcare center. To the east of this row was Oldfield Street running from north to south, with a bank in the northeast corner. Smith Street was located to the south of the block, while opposite was another block that included a park, library and the town hall. Looking across Oldfield Street was another bank. Heading further south was Green Street and an array of houses along the southernmost boundary. To the far west was Newton Street, running from north to south.
Currently, the stores in the far north have been converted into a shopping mall, while the childcare center and banks remain unchanged. The block between Smith Street and Green Street also remains intact, but Smith Street is now closed to vehicles for pedestrians. Crosswalks have been established on Oldfield Street and Green Street. Finally, all individual houses have been converted into apartments.
