Question: Solving environmental problems should be the responsibility of one international organisation rather than the responsibility of each national government. To what extent do you agree or disagree?
ANSWER:
The responsibility for addressing ecological challenges should rest with a single global organization rather than being managed by individual national governments. I mostly disagree with this opinion.
One valid reason for my disagreement is that national governments have the ability to implement policies quickly without bureaucratic delays. International agreements often require lengthy negotiations, making it difficult to respond promptly to pressing issues. In contrast, governments can enact regulations that suit their circumstances without waiting for external approval. For example, many local authorities have successfully banned plastic bags and single-use plastics, significantly reducing waste in their communities. If such decisions had to go through a global body, the process would likely be much slower and less effective.
Moreover, different regions face distinct environmental challenges, and national governments are in a better position to devise strategies that align with their specific needs. A universal approach enforced by an international organization may overlook regional factors, leading to ineffective or impractical solutions. For instance, countries with vast coastlines may prioritize marine conservation, while landlocked nations may focus on deforestation or desertification.
Although national governments should lead environmental initiatives, international cooperation remains essential, particularly in terms of financial and technological support. Many developing nations lack the resources to invest in sustainable solutions, making external funding crucial for progress. A global organization can assist by providing grants, expertise, and cutting-edge technology to countries struggling to implement green initiatives. For example, renewable energy projects, such as solar and wind farms, require significant investment, which some governments may not afford without international backing.
In conclusion, while I admit that international organizations can offer valuable resources, I largely believe that it is ultimately more practical for national governments to take responsibility for ecological policies. Their ability to act swiftly and tailor solutions to local conditions makes them better equipped to handle environmental challenges effectively. (305 words)
