Question: All university students should do some voluntary work to help the local community. To what extent do you agree or disagree?
ANSWER:
Many argue that every undergraduate should participate in voluntary activities to support their neighbourhood. Despite the potential for the promotion of social awareness amongst young individuals, I mostly disagree with this notion as such endeavours should be a matter of choice and students are already overloaded with their academic demands.
The foremost justification for my disagreement is that mandatory voluntary work for all tertiary students may encroach on their autonomy. As people have their unique circumstances and interests, these compulsory tasks may remove their alienable right of freedom, thus instilling a sense of resentment and decreasing the effectiveness of these meaningful activities. For example, due to compulsory engagement, voluntary campaigns organised by certain universities in Vietnam often produce subpar outcomes.
Adding further credence to my belief is that college students often face significant academic pressure, leaving them less time to partake in voluntary pursuits. Challenges including heavy workload, coursework or research projects are already overwhelming. Therefore, requiring them to undertake more side obligations may distract them from their main target which is achieving outstanding learning results.
However, I concede that adding required voluntary responsibilities to pupils’ agenda may heighten their social awareness. This can engender a feeling of empathy towards those with difficulties and make them become more responsible toward societal issues such as environmental preservation or illiteracy eradication. For instance, beach cleaning services can enhance their ability to discern water pollution concerns, thereby prompting them to take proactive steps towards safeguarding the ocean and coastlines.
In conclusion, I largely believe volunteering should not be made mandatory as it may limit students’ freedom in pursuing their interests outside of academics and detract their resources to less important study issues. Nonetheless, I acknowledge the potential benefits of raising young minds’ consciousness toward pressing societal problems. Where possible, voluntary obligations should be optional so they can foster genuine desire to contribute to the community. (312 words)
