TASK 1:
Question: The diagrams below show the development of a small fishing village and its surrounding area into a large tourist resort.
ANSWER:
The two maps illustrate the transformation of a coastal fishing village and its surrounding area between 1974 and 2004.
Overall, the area saw a dramatic shift from a small, rural fishing community into a highly urbanised tourist resort, marked by the replacement of natural and agricultural features with commercial, recreational, and residential infrastructure.
In 1974, the fishing village was located in the southern coastal area near the harbour, with several boats anchored in the sea. To the west of the village, there was a dense woodland area, and slightly northeast of it, olive groves were situated on the hillside. Further inland to the north and northeast, small villages were scattered across the landscape, and the eastern hills were used for grazing sheep and goats. The total population at that time was 12,000, with no tourist facilities present.
By 2004, this once-rural area had been heavily developed into a resort town. The original fishing village remained in the same coastal spot but was surrounded by new developments. To the west, the woodland had been cleared to make way for a large golf course, while hotels were constructed along the western beachfront. Beaches were established on both sides of the bay, and the eastern side also saw the addition of high-rise hotel buildings. The olive groves were replaced with farmland for producing fruit and vegetables to serve the hotels. A road network was introduced, connecting the inland areas to the coast. The original villages to the north and east were converted into areas with tourist shops, and new residential zones for locals were built nearby. By 2004, the population had increased significantly to 80,000, with facilities accommodating up to 50,000 tourists.
