In some cities, public parks and open spaces are being converted into gardens where local residents can grow their own fruit and vegetables. While this change brings certain benefits, I believe its drawbacks are more significant.
Admittedly, transforming public land into community gardens can be beneficial. Firstly, it enables residents to grow fresh fruit and vegetables, which encourages healthier eating habits while reducing household grocery expenses. Secondly, these gardens can strengthen social bonds. People often work together to maintain shared plots, exchange gardening experience, and interact with neighbours whom they might otherwise never meet. As a result, community gardens can foster a stronger sense of belonging among local residents.
However, I believe these advantages are outweighed by the disadvantages. The foremost concern is that converting parks into gardens reduces public recreational space. Parks are designed to serve a wide range of users, including children playing, elderly people exercising, and families relaxing outdoors. Replacing them with cultivation areas means these activities become more restricted, diminishing the social and recreational value that public spaces are intended to provide. Another major drawback is that community gardens are often difficult to manage fairly. Individual plots may be monopolised by a small number of residents, while others have little or no opportunity to participate. Moreover, maintaining these gardens requires continuous effort, and if they are neglected, they can quickly become untidy, attract pests, and create hygiene issues, ultimately reducing the attractiveness of the surrounding neighbourhood.
In conclusion, although community gardens can promote healthier lifestyles and closer neighbourhood relationships, I believe the loss of multifunctional public spaces and the practical challenges of managing these gardens make this development more disadvantageous overall.
