TASK 2:
Question: Experts say older people are healthier when they spend time with others and exercise daily. However, many older people today suffer from loneliness and poor physical fitness. What are the reasons for this? What measures should be taken?
ANSWER:
As people grow older, spending time with others and exercising regularly are essential for maintaining both physical and mental well-being. However, many elderly people today experience loneliness and poor physical fitness. This essay will discuss the main reasons for these problems and suggest two effective solutions.
There are two main reasons why many older adults suffer from these issues. The first is the decline of extended families. In the past, several generations often lived together, enabling older people to enjoy daily companionship. Nowadays, however, younger people frequently move to other cities for work, leaving many elderly parents living alone. Consequently, they are more likely to experience loneliness and even depression. Another reason is that many seniors lead increasingly sedentary lifestyles. After retirement, they often spend long hours watching television or using smartphones instead of exercising. In addition, health problems and a fear of injury discourage many older people from being physically active, causing their fitness to deteriorate further.
Several measures can be taken to address these problems. One effective solution is for governments to invest more in community centres that organise activities for senior citizens, such as walking clubs, exercise classes and hobby groups. These programmes would not only encourage older people to stay physically active but also provide valuable opportunities to socialise and build meaningful relationships. Another important measure is for families to spend more time with their elderly relatives. Regular visits, frequent phone calls and involving them in family gatherings can greatly reduce feelings of loneliness while encouraging them to lead a more active lifestyle.
In conclusion, the increasing loneliness and poor physical fitness of older people mainly result from changing family structures and increasingly sedentary lifestyles. These problems can be effectively addressed by expanding community programmes for senior citizens and encouraging families to provide greater emotional and social support.
