Question: The diagrams below give information about two road tunnels in two Australian cities.
ANSWER:
The pictures illustrate the designs of two road tunnels in two cities in Australia. Overall, tunnel A is shorter, shallower and accommodates less vehicles. In addition, although tunnel B required a shorter construction period, it cost substantially more. Moreover, the first one is built underwater, while the second one is under a normal road.
Regarding tunnel A, it was built 1.5 meters below the surface and on top of it is a layer of sand that is underwater. It is 2.2 kilometers long and contains a dual carriageway, each consisting of two traffic lanes. Furthermore, the construction of the tunnel started in 1987 and took 5 years to finish, costing a sum of $556 million.
Turning to tunnel B, which was built 2.5 meters underground, on top of it is a traffic road and a supporting layer of stone and clay separates them. The tunnel’s length is 3.6 kilometers and it comprises 2 carriageways, each facilitating 3 vehicle lanes. Finally, although taking a shorter time to construct from 2004 to 2007, it cost roughly double tunnel A.
