Question: The diagram shows the design of a modern landfill for household waste.
ANSWER:
The illustrations demonstrate the building and use of a contemporary household waste burial system. Overall, the process consists of three main stages, beginning with the construction of the site, followed by the filling of trash, and ending with sealing the landfill.
The first primary stage instructs the establishment of the landfill. Initially, a hole is excavated in a natural rock surface, with another smaller hole dug deeper at the bottom. Following this, two layers of clay and a synthetic material are laid on the surface of the hole, with the latter on top of the former. Subsequently, numerous pipes are placed at the bottom, covering the smaller hole, making it a drainage tank.
Regarding the remaining stages, household waste is transferred by trucks and dumped into the landfill. During this process, the pipes filter waste liquid into the drainage tank. After the landfill is full, an L-shaped pipe is positioned with one end underground and the other on the ground for gas emission. Finally, the landfill is covered by a clay surface.
