Question: In some countries, online shopping is replacing shopping in stores. Do you think it is a positive or negative development?
ANSWER:
In many parts of the world brick-and-mortar businesses have been substituted by online purchasing. Although this trend can be disadvantageous to some extent, personally I believe that this should be considered as a positive development because it will help the environment with less pollution and give customers pleasant experiences in shopping.
To begin with, e-commerce can have some downsides due to products’ false impressions on the Internet and late delivery. As regards the quality assurance, customers are informed about a product only through some pictures and description which can be easily edited and exaggerated, and due to a lack of ability to touch the product, customers are more likely to feel disappointed if the order they receive does not match their expectation. When it comes to delivery time, it may take several days for shipping. For the products which are urgently needed, in-store shopping can be a better choice because consumers can have their products faster.
However, these weaknesses are insignificant compared to the strengths when people opt for e-commerce. First and foremost, online shopping is an effective way to safeguard the environment. This is simply because the number of vehicles travelling to physical stores will greatly reduce. As a result, the amount of C02 emission proportionally goes down, which is a effective contributor for climate change mitigation. From customers’ perspective, shopping online can offer them a wider choice of items without wasting time and energy moving. They no longer need to travel from store to store when purchasing a pair of shoes or a skirt, for example. Moreover, this will prevent customers from some negative feelings such as embarrassment and guilt when they leave a store without buying anything.
In conclusion, because of the facts mentioned above, while it is clear that there will be both pros and cons when online shopping overtakes physical stores, I place an emphasis on its advantages for the sake of the environment and people’s buying experiences. (323 words)
