Question: Nowadays, some famous people are considered as ‘role models’ and they are having an increasing influence on the young. Is this a positive or negative development?
ANSWER:
In today’s society, the impact of celebrities, who are regarded as ideal examples, on the younger generation has undeniably escalated. The demerits of learning from their bad habits and valuing unrealistic standards may overshadow the merit of motivating young people to partake in positive social initiatives.
One principal concern is that youths may adopt harmful behaviours from their idols. Many superstars often lead very scandalous private lives, which are often exposed by the media. However, due to having a large fan base, their young followers may disregard their controversial lifestyle and unethical conduct, which may normalise inappropriate actions and anti-social attitudes amongst the audience.
Another conspicuous drawback is that as public figures become more influential on the youth, they may set unreasonable perceptions of many aspects of life. They often portray their ideals of life to the public, promoting unattainable standards of beauty, wealth, and success. For instance, endorsements and extravagant lifestyles showcased by celebrities can fuel materialistic desires among their young followers, instilling a sense of disgrace if they cannot achieve the narrow benchmarks.
However, the benefit of celebrities leveraging their influence to raise youngsters’ awareness about various societal challenges should not be downplayed. Through their activism, they call for swift actions and encourage more engagement in critical issues such as pollution, wildlife protection or the elimination of gender inequality. For example, they can organise campaigns for charitable fundraising for victims of a natural disaster or for the safeguarding of rare animals.
In conclusion, although the increased effect of household names on young fans can be instrumental in raising awareness about critical societal issues, this trend is more worrying because some of them may exert negative role modelling and their illusory lifestyle may humiliate young supporters. Where possible, fostering critical thinking in young people is vital to discern positive and negative influences, ensuring a well-rounded understanding of celebrities’ impact. (312 words)
