TASK 1:
Question: The bar chart shows expectations for change of European young people in the next 20 years in five different areas.
ANSWER:
The bar chart illustrates the expectations of European young people regarding changes in five different areas over the next 20 years, namely health, air quality, water quality, food quality, and people communication. Overall, in most areas, a larger proportion of young Europeans expected conditions to deteriorate rather than improve. While communication between people was predicted to experience the most positive change, air quality was considered the area most likely to worsen.
In terms of positive expectations, people’s communication ranked first, with approximately 63% of respondents believing that it would improve, while only around 37% thought it would get worse. Food quality also received relatively optimistic predictions, as just under half of young people (about 48%) anticipated improvements, compared to slightly over half expecting a decline. Likewise, around 42% of respondents believed health would improve, although a significantly higher figure, at roughly 58%, expected it to deteriorate.
By contrast, environmental concerns attracted more pessimistic views. Water quality was expected to worsen by about half of the respondents, while the remaining 50% predicted improvements. Air quality was viewed most negatively, with close to 80% of young Europeans believing it would deteriorate, whereas only just over one fifth anticipated positive developments.
