Question: The table below shows employment patterns for males and females in New Zealand in 1993 and 2003
ANSWER:
The table depicts the composition of workers, for both genders, across various industries in New Zealand in two separate years, 1993 and 2003. Overall, services and transport witnessed the highest percentage of female employees throughout, whereas the highest figure for males shifted from agriculture to services and transport over the period. Additionally, all sectors became more gender-balanced.
In 1993, 53% of females worked in services and transport, followed by manufacturing and social services at 25% and 13%, respectively. Agricultural professions recorded only 8% for women, while business and building saw negligible shares. As for men, agriculture documented 38% male workers, which was moderately higher than services and transport at 22%. Moreover, building and manufacturing exhibited comparable percentages of between 12% and 16%.
By 2003, the rate of services and transport female workers dropped to 36%, whilst that of males increased to 31%. Furthermore, business experienced surges from both genders to roughly a quarter. Although the figure for men in manufacturing remained fairly unchanged, that of women about halved to 12%. In contrast, agriculture documented a nearly five-fold plunge in the male rate to 8%, while females relatively plateaued at 6%. Finally, social services recorded rises in both women and men to 18% and 9%, respectively.
